Fake emails are using my name
Someone has been emailing my clients pretending to be me. The emails use my name, the VisualWeb business name and a copy of my email signature. They did not come from me or anyone at VisualWeb.
If you’ve received one, you haven’t done anything wrong. Here’s how to tell the difference and what to do.
How to spot a fake email
Check the sender’s address
Tap or click the sender’s name to see the full address. A matching name on its own isn’t enough.
Look at the logo
The fake emails use our old wolf logo. We no longer use it.
Watch for pressure
Urgent requests to pay an invoice, update payment details, log in to something or open an unexpected attachment are classic warning signs.
Real or fake?
A genuine email from me
- Comes from an address ending in @visualweb.com.au or @visualdomains.com.au
- Is about work you’re expecting
- Is happy for you to call and check first
A likely fake
- Comes from any other address, even if the name says Edwin or VisualWeb
- Shows the old wolf logo
- Pushes you to pay, change bank details or click a link quickly
My simple rule
If an email from me asks you to pay something, change bank details or click a link you weren’t expecting, call me before you do anything.
If you’ve received a fake email
- Don’t click any links, open attachments or reply.
- Don’t make any payment.
- Call me on 1300 144 414 so I know about it.
- Report it to Scamwatch.
